Transforming the stations into lively, engaging, and memorable spaces.
Clean, convenient, yet conspicuously lacking in engaging elements – this is the current state of Helsinki metro stations. Despite their operational efficiency, these stations remain bereft of distinctive character, interaction, and entertainment, leaving room for substantial enhancement.

Our project, Luminous Landmarks, envisages transforming these mundane transit points into vibrant, interactive, and unforgettable spaces. We aim to infuse a unique identity into each station through interactive projection mapping, creating an immersive and engaging user experience while bolstering safety measures within these bustling hubs.

Luminous Landmarks is not merely a design enhancement project but a comprehensive solution to several underlying issues – information accessibility, safety, and user engagement. It is a synergy of technology and art, a marriage of utility and aesthetics, all aimed at making every journey through Helsinki's metro stations a memorable experience.

Experience the transformation with us as we “illuminate” each station with a distinctive character, fostering user interaction, promoting safety, and providing essential information in the most visually engaging manner. Welcome to Luminous Landmarks – a project that reimagines how we perceive and interact with metro stations.

CONCEPT

Infusing Identity
Each metro station will be infused with a distinct identity through unique projection designs, reflecting the character of its surrounding neighbourhood or landmarks. For instance, at the Aalto University metro station, projections of iconic vase shapes designed by Alvar Aalto not only enhance the station's identity but also help commuters instantly recognize their station.

Providing information & formation
The dynamic nature of projection mapping facilitates intuitive information dissemination. As a train approaches, the projections morph into lines, subtly guiding users to queue. The number of projection elements can indicate train occupancy, directing passengers towards less crowded cars and ensuring a comfortable commute.

Wayfinding with a Difference
To counteract confusion within the large metro station spaces, distinct projections are strategically designed to direct passengers towards exits, amenities, and landmarks, reducing the likelihood of misdirection. These projections can change based on time or events, ensuring a versatile and effective solution to wayfinding.

Interactive engagement
As passengers navigate the station, their movements spark a dynamic response from the projections, turning a simple transit into an interactive experience. This animated feature transforms the station into an interactive playground and fosters community and engagement among users.
Promoting Safety
Engaging projections can serve as captivating entertainment that naturally guides users towards the station's centre, effectively distancing them from the incoming trains. This method can be efficient in safeguarding children, effortlessly directing their movements while maintaining their interest.

Station-Specific Mapping

Rautatientori / Central Railway Station
The Aurora Gateway
Symbolic of Finland's mesmerizing natural beauty, the Rautatientori, the central station of Helsinki, will be bathed in an interactive projection of the Northern Lights. Passengers waiting for their train can immerse themselves and ignite their anticipation for a potential journey towards Lapland. The projections, reactive to the movement of passengers, mimic the undulating movement of the Northern Lights, transforming the station into a portal to Finland's enchanting wilderness.

Keilaniemi / Kägeludden
The Playful Peninsula
Keilaniemi, which translates to "Bowling Pin Peninsula," becomes a virtual bowling alley under the interactive projection mapping concept. The station's projections feature larger-than-life bowling pins that react to the movements of the passengers. As passengers walk past, they metaphorically "roll the ball," leading to pins being knocked down in a striking display of light and colour. This playful interaction turns the usually mundane wait into an engaging, fun-filled experience, embodying the whimsical character of the station's name.
